...Women's activist. Born in Mie Prefecture, she dropped out of Tokyo Women's Higher Normal School. She married the following year in 1919 and took the surname Kaneko (divorced in 1939). After the birth of her son in 1919, she worked as a reporter for the Kokumin Shimbun and Shufu no Tomo newspapers before turning her attention to women's issues. In 1924, she formed the Women's Suffrage Promotion Association with Ichikawa Fusae and others, and devoted herself to winning women's suffrage. She was also active in the women's city government cleanup movement and the maternity protection movement, and in 1942 she became a director of the Great Japan Women's Association. After World War II, she continued to work hard for the women's movement as the representative of the National Council of Widows' Organizations and the National Council of Regional Women's Organizations (Chifuren), and served as a member of the House of Councilors for nine years from 1952. ...
