Japanese: 洪大容 - こうたいよう

A practical thinker and scientist of the Joseon Dynasty. He was an astronomer, mathematician, and also famous as a musician (a master of the Xuanqin). He was a leading figure in the Northern School of Astronomy, which included Park Jiwon. He had a particularly deep knowledge of astronomy, and carried out measurements at the observatory called Rongsuikaku in his home in his hometown of Cheongju. At the age of 35, he traveled to Beijing with his uncle, who had been selected as a letter official, and is known for debating on an equal footing with the German Qin Tian Jianzheng (director of the observatory) of the Qing Dynasty. In his book Dialogues on the Mountains, he argued for the theory of the Earth's rotation (first proposed in Korea by Kim Seok-moon half a century earlier).
