A genus of the Asteraceae family consisting of about 70 species, distributed widely in the Northern Hemisphere. Many species are known from southwestern Asia to the Caucasus, but in Japan, only T. vulgare L. (illustration), which is widely distributed in Eurasia, is found in Hokkaido. As a genus, it is closely related to Chrysanthemum , and was once thought to be in the same genus. It is a perennial or annual plant with alternate leaves. It produces head flowers consisting of female and bisexual flowers. The female flowers only have three shallow lobes at the end, and the ligule is not developed.
