Many of the original species are cultivated as ornamental plants because of their unique shapes, but they can also be used as live flowers that do not require water. Sisal hemp is obtained from Agave sisalana Perr., which belongs to the agave genus, and tequila is obtained from Agave tequilana Web. Pulque, a fermented alcoholic drink made from the agave genus, is said to have been produced by the Aztecs in 833.
