A special apparatus for dispersing spores, which can be morphologically divided into three types. (1) A long, thin cell found among spores in the sporangia of mosses, which is formed when some of the archesporial cells in the sporangia do not develop into spores. (2) Two string-like attachments found in spores of the genus Equisetum, which are formed when the outer membrane of the spore peels off and thickens, and appear to be four because they are attached at the center of each. Both (1) and (2) are highly hygroscopic, and have the property of stretching when dry and curling when wet. (3) Non-protoplasmic hairs found in true slime molds, which are sometimes called elytra, are used to disperse spores.
