Lehmann, W.

…He was praised for his combination of poetic tradition with modern methods of expression, and for his purification and clarity of language. He received the Büchner Prize from the Academy of German Language and Letters in 1956, and served as its president from 1972 to 1975. He is one of the leading poets in postwar West Germany. Influenced by Wilhelm Lehmann (1882-1962) and others, he started out with sensitive nature poetry, and gained a pan-European perspective through contact with Lorca, Auden, and the French Surrealists (Apollinaire, Éluard, etc.). However, he went beyond these and consistently pursued themes of lyric poetry and innovations in methods of expression, writing poetry that was "non-engagement, non-political, non-topical" while engaging with the rapidly changing modern world. His poems, such as "The Invisible Hand" (1962), were collected in two volumes of "Complete Poems" (1965, 1975), but his numerous translations of contemporary French and Spanish poetry, as well as essays and critiques such as "Aspects of Contemporary German Lyric Poetry" (1961) and "Poetic Diary" (1966), are also important.
