Russian composer. Born into an aristocratic family in Troitskoye (now Belyov district, Tula Oblast) in southwestern Russia, he moved to St. Petersburg at the age of four. He studied music from an early age and became a Ministry of Justice official, but after meeting Glinka in 1835, he decided to become a composer. He then developed his own path along the path Glinka had paved, and interacted with the Russian national school of music. He wrote two operas, both based on Pushkin's originals, making use of the intonation of Russian speech: Rusalka (premiered in 1856) and the unfinished Stone Guest (completed posthumously by Cui and Rimsky-Korsakov, premiered in 1872). The Stone Guest in particular is known as a groundbreaking opera in which most of the vocal parts are written in melodic recitative, and its bold harmonies had a profound influence on Mussorgsky. His other works include orchestral pieces, choral pieces, and songs. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
