Along with deflagration, this is a type of explosion in which the propagation speed of the flame front (explosion speed) exceeds the speed of sound. It is also called detonation. The mechanism of detonation is explained below using a gas explosion as an example. The flame front initially propagates at a speed much slower than the speed of sound, sending out a shock wave forward, but the gas undergoes adiabatic compression in the front, causing the pressure to increase rapidly and the flow rate to decrease, so shock waves from behind catch up one after another, further increasing the pressure, and the temperature of the gas rises, causing spontaneous ignition. 爆燃とともに爆発の一つの形態であり,火炎面の伝播速度(爆速)が音速を超えるもの。デトネーションともいう。ガス爆発を例にとって爆ごうの生成機構を以下に述べる。火炎面は初め音速よりはるかに小さな速度で伝播しながら前方へ衝撃波を送り出すが,気体は前方で断熱圧縮を受ける結果,圧力が急激に高まり流速が小さくなるため後方からの衝撃波がつぎつぎと追いついてきてさらに圧力が強められ,ガスの温度が高まって自然発火する。
