…It is also called eserin. It is an alkaloid contained in the seeds of Physostigma venenosum , a legume plant found in the Calabar River basin in Guinea, West Africa. The natives call these seeds eserumame, while whites call them calabar beans. It is said that the natives of Guinea once used these beans in trials, and if they ate them they were found guilty, but if they survived they were found innocent. These beans are highly poisonous. In 1865, the toxic component was isolated in crystalline form and named physostigmine after the plant name and eserin after the local word. …
