A series of wars that took place in the Aceh Kingdom on the northwestern tip of Sumatra from around 1873 to 1904. The Dutch colonial government intervened in an internal conflict between the kingdom's secular ruling class and Islamic leaders, allying with the former and fighting against the latter. As a result, the kingdom was conquered by the Dutch, but with international relations also involved, the Dutch had difficulty resolving the conflict. It was one of Indonesia's largest anti-colonial wars.
