Concholepas concholepas;barnacle rock-shell

Concholepas concholepas;barnacle rock-shell
Mollusca, Gastropoda, Muricidae. Also called Loco shell or Chilean abalone. Shell height 11cm, shell diameter 9cm. The shell is thick, the spiral layer suddenly becomes large and thick, and the body layer and shell opening are both wide, giving it a similar appearance to the abalone, hence the name. However, it is not closely related to the abalone, and it is easy to distinguish it from the abalone because there is no row of water holes on the shell. The shell surface has obvious spiral ribs all over. It is distributed in Chile and Peru in South America, and lives on shallow sea reefs. It is called locos (meaning abalone) in its place of origin, and the soft body is edible and is imported to Japan. The secretion from the subbranchial gland of the soft body turns purple when exposed to sunlight, so the Incas used it, along with the saliciforme, to make a purple dye (→ Shellfish purple).
