Auschwitz
A city in southern Poland, about 50km west of Krakow. Its Polish name is Oświęcim. It is located on the outer edge of the Upper Silesian industrial region, and is home to chemical, metal processing, and leather industries. It is also a key transportation hub. During World War II, it was occupied by Germany, and a huge concentration camp was set up on the outskirts, where about 1.4 million people, including Jewish civilians, were massacred. The site is now a museum, and was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1979. Its population is about 50,000.
