A city in southern Poland, about 50km west of Krakow. Its Polish name is Oświęcim. It is located on the outer edge of the Upper Silesian industrial region, and is home to chemical, metal processing, and leather industries. It is also a key transportation hub. During World War II, it was occupied by Germany, and a huge concentration camp was set up on the outskirts, where about 1.4 million people, including Jewish civilians, were massacred. The site is now a museum, and was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1979. Its population is about 50,000.

ポーランド南部，クラクフ西方約50kmの都市。ポーランド名はオシフィエンチム。上シロンスク工業地帯の外縁に位置し，化学・金属加工・皮革工業が行われる。交通の要地でもある。第２次大戦中ドイツに占領され，郊外に巨大な強制収容所が設けられて，ユダヤ系一般市民など約140万人が虐殺された。跡地は博物館となっており，1979年世界文化遺産に登録。約５万人。
