A port city in the northwest of Rogaland province in southwest Norway. Population 27,008 (1981). Many ships call at the port, including the Bergen-Newcastle-upon-Tyne route, and the shipping industry, four shipyards, and an aluminum factory on the island of Kalm employ several thousand residents. It originally started as a salting center for herring caught in the spring, but developed as the herring boomed, and became a town in 1866. There is an archaeological site said to be the tomb of King Harald I (Beautiful Hair). [Sugawara Kuniki] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
