Around 1469 - 1524
A German Augustinian monk and teacher of the Reformation leader Luther. Born to a Saxon noble family, he studied in Cologne and Leipzig, and became a monk in Munich around 1490. He received a doctorate in theology in 1500 and served as abbot of a monastery in Munich, but in 1503 he was invited to become the first dean of theology at the University of Wittenberg, which had been newly established the previous year, and at the same time became the deputy superior general of the monastic order in Germany, and also became Luther's spiritual teacher. In 1512 he recommended Luther as his successor as a professor of the Bible. With the start of the Reformation, he tried to protect Luther from the Roman Inquisition, but he was suspected of being a sympathizer of Luther, so in 1520 he resigned as deputy superior general and became abbot of the Benedictine Order, dying in Salzburg.

ドイツのアウグスティヌス隠修修道会士。宗教改革者ルターの師。ザクセンの貴族の出で，ケルンとライプチヒで学び，1490年ころミュンヘンで修道士となる。1500年に神学博士となりミュンヘンの修道院長をしていたが，03年に前年新設のウィッテンベルク大学の初代神学部長として招かれ，かたわら修道会ドイツ総長代理となり，ルターの信仰的な師ともなる。12年ルターをみずからの後継者の聖書教授に推す。宗教改革の始まりとともに，ルターをローマの審問から守ろうと努力するが，ルターの同調者との疑いを受けて，20年総長代理を辞し，ベネディクト会修道院長となってザルツブルクで死去した。
