It is also called Old Prussian or simply Prussian. It is a language belonging to the Baltic language family. While Lithuanian and Latvian, which form the eastern group of this family, still exist, several languages that formed the western group have completely disappeared, the last of which was Prussian, which died out in the 18th century, so it is called Old Prussian. This language was spoken in eastern Prussia, and after the Teutonic Knights conquered the area in the 13th century, Germanization progressed, and Prussia later came to be considered a part of Germany, but it was originally the land of the Western Baltic people, including the Prussians who spoke Prussian.

古代プロシア語ともいい，また単にプロイセン語(プロシア語)ともいわれる。バルト語派に属する一言語。この語派の東のグループを形成するリトアニア語とラトビア語が現存しているのに，西のグループを形成していたいくつかの言語は18世紀に滅んだこのプロイセン語を最後に完全に消滅したので古代プロイセン語といわれる。この言語が話されていたのは東部プロイセンで，13世紀にドイツ騎士団がこの地を征服して以来ゲルマン化が進み，後にプロイセンはドイツの地と考えられるようになるが，元来はプロイセン語を話すプロイセン人を含む西バルト人の地である。
