In Dutch ethnology, the term "Dayak" is generally used as a general term for the indigenous people of Proto-Malay descent who live on the island of Borneo (Kalimantan). Therefore, compound names such as Kayan Dayak, Kenya Dayak, Ngaju Dayak, Sea Dayak (Iban), and Land Dayak are often used with the name of each ethnic group added to this term. There are various theories about the linguistic and cultural affinities between the Dayak tribes, but they can be broadly divided into three groups: (1) the northern group (especially the Murut people), which is close to the Philippine tribes, (2) the Central Kalimantan tribes (including the Kayan and Kenya peoples), and (3) the West Borneo tribes (the Iban and Land Dayak).
