Chatterton, Thomas

Chatterton, Thomas
Born: 20 November 1752, Bristol
[Died] August 24, 1770, London. British poet. Representative of the so-called "Gothic Revival". He published his own creations, claiming to have discovered medieval documents and various manuscripts, and is particularly famous for a poem he claimed to have written by the 15th century poet Thomas Raleigh. This was widely circulated as a medievalist popular at the time, but this fabrication was discovered by T. Tyrwhitt in 1777. However, the excellence of the work itself is widely acknowledged. In 1770, his comic opera The Revenge was performed in London and was a temporary success, but in August of the same year, in despair over his poverty, he committed suicide by taking arsenic at the age of just 18.
