Kyokabanashi - Kyoka stories

Japanese: 狂歌咄 - きょうかばなし

Kana-zoshi. 5 volumes, 5 books. Written by Asai Ryoi. Published in 1672 (Kanbun 12). Draft edition by Muto Saisatsu. This book begins with a preface imitating Tsurezuregusa, "As I sat by the eaves as I was alone, I heard the worldly things you were singing to me without any reason, and how strange it is to hear them." It is a collection of anecdotes with kyoka at the center of the stories. It mainly consists of humorous stories including poems by Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, Ono no Komachi, poems found in old books and kyoka based on them, as well as contemporary kyoka, but there are also parts that read like a treatise on poetry, such as a definition of "hikaitai."

仮名草子。5巻5冊。浅井了意作。1672年(寛文12)刊。武藤西察版下書。〈つれつれなるまゝに庇の簾にむかひてこゝらにうたひゆく世になしことをそのわけもなく聞つくれはあだしうこそ物さはかしけれ〉と《徒然草》を模した序文で始まる本書は，狂歌を話の中心に据えた逸話集である。柿本人丸，小野小町らの歌や，古書に見られる歌とそれをもととする狂歌，また当代の狂歌を含む笑話が主であるが，〈誹諧躰〉の定義を述べたりする歌論書めく部分もある。
