A terrestrial orchid that grows in deciduous broadleaf forests throughout Japan. The Japanese name for this plant comes from the fact that its leaves are similar to those of the white orchid or the Japanese lantern plant, but its flowers are small. Its leaves are narrower and longer than those of the Calanthe, so it is also called Sasabine. It has a pseudobulb that is 1.5-2cm tall and has one or two leaves on it. The leaves are linear-lanceolate, 20-30cm long, and have noticeable vertical wrinkles. The flower stalk grows laterally from the base of the pseudobulb in April-June, is 40-60cm tall, and produces 10-30 flowers. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
