Also known as vat dyes. A group of dyes represented by indigo and indanthrene dyes. The dye molecules contain carbonyl groups, making them insoluble in water and alkali, so they are reduced with caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) and hydrosulfite during dyeing to make them soluble in water and alkali. When fibers are immersed in this solution (called a vat bath) and then exposed to air, they are oxidized and return to their original dye, resulting in a fast dye that does not come off even when washed.

バット染料とも。インジゴ系，インダンスレン系に代表される染料の一群。染料分子中にカルボニル基を有し，水，アルカリに不溶であるため，染色に際し苛性ソーダ（水酸化ナトリウム）およびハイドロサルファイトを作用させて還元し，水，アルカリに可溶にする。この溶液（建浴(たてよく)という）に繊維を浸し，次いで空気中にさらすと，酸化されて元の染料に戻って色が出，洗っても落ちない堅牢(けんろう)な染色が得られる。
