Also known as vat dyes. A group of dyes represented by indigo and indanthrene dyes. The dye molecules contain carbonyl groups, making them insoluble in water and alkali, so they are reduced with caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) and hydrosulfite during dyeing to make them soluble in water and alkali.
