Ouchi family wall inscription

This is a collection of laws and regulations from the Ouchi clan, a feudal lord in the Muromachi period. It was compiled later from some of the laws and regulations that the Ouchi clan, who formed a large shugo domain stretching from the western Chugoku region to northern Kyushu, issued individually, and is also known by other names such as the Ouchi clan's law books. The original version, which contains laws and regulations from 1439 (Eikyou 11) to 1495 (Meio 4), is thought to have been compiled by the Ouchi clan themselves not long after August 1495. In addition to this, there are several other extant copies, including one that was significantly expanded after the fall of the Ouchi clan and one that mainly contains laws and regulations from the 16th century.

In its original form, there were many provisions regarding the control of the domain by the shugo, such as the internal control of the vassals, the reconciliation of interests between feudal lords, the regulation of traffic and distribution, military mobilization, and public order in the town of Yamaguchi, but there were few provisions regarding the control of peasants. Published versions include "Collection of Historical Materials on Medieval Legal Systems, Volume 3" and others.
