Comet Ikeya‐Seki

Japanese: 池谷=関彗星 - いけやせきすいせい（英語表記）Comet Ikeya‐Seki

A new comet with a magnitude of 7 was discovered in the constellation Hydra by Ikeya Kaoru (1943-) of Shizuoka and Seki Tsutomu (1930-) of Kochi in the early morning of September 19, 1965. On October 21 of the same year, it passed just 130,000 km from the surface of the sun, and its nucleus was observed splitting into several pieces by a coronagraph at the Norikura Corona Observatory. It subsequently appeared in the eastern sky at dawn with a 30-degree tail, and was observed in infrared light for the first time, contributing to the development of comet astronomy. Comets with almost the same orbit as this comet have appeared in 1843, 1880, 1882, 1887, 1945, and 1965, and are known as the Sun Grazing Comet Group, a group of comets that graze the sun.

1965年9月19日早朝，静岡の池谷薫(1943‐　)，高知の関勉(1930‐　)がうみへび座で発見した光度7等の新すい星。同年10月21日，太陽の表面からわずか13万kmのところを通過し，核が数個に分裂するのが乗鞍コロナ観測所のコロナグラフにより観測された。その後，明け方の東天に長さ30度の尾をなびかせて現れ，初めて赤外線による観測が行われるなど，すい星天文学の発展に寄与した。このすい星とほとんど同じ軌道をもったすい星が，1843年，80年，82年，87年，1945年，65年などに出現していて，太陽をかすめるすい星群Sun Grazing Comet Groupと呼ばれている。
