A general term for localized tumors (polyps) that protrude into the intestinal lumen. They may originate from the mucosal epithelium or from submucosal tumors. As such, their morphology is diverse, ranging from spherical, mobile with a stalk, to hemispherical without a stalk, or even slightly elevated. They may range in size to the point of blocking the lumen. They may be single or multiple. When there are more than 100 of them, the term polyposis is used. Depending on the tissue that makes up the tumor, they may be classified as tumorous or non-tumorous. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
