Iwatake (rock mushroom) - Gyrophora esculenta

Japanese: イワタケ(岩茸) - イワタケ（英語表記）Gyrophora esculenta

A species of foliose lichen belonging to the family Glomerulaceae. It is found in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu and the Korean peninsula. It grows on the middle slopes of high mountains and on rocks in mountainous areas. It spreads in a circular or elliptical shape and grows on a protruding part in the center of the underside. It is leathery and can reach a diameter of 10 cm. The upper surface is gray-brown. The underside is dark brown and densely covered with short spines. The medulla is white. It is edible. A similar species called G. vella exists in high mountains.

イワタケ科に属する葉状地衣類の1種。本州，四国，九州および朝鮮半島に分布。高山の中腹や山地の岩石上に生じる。円形または楕円形に広がり，裏面中央の突出部で着生する。革質で直径 10cmに及ぶ。表面は灰褐色。裏面は暗褐色，短い刺毛を密生する。髄層は白色。食用とする。なお高山にはタカネイワタケ G. vellaと称する類似種がある。
