A bird of the family Satyridae in the order Grui. This family consists of one species, Satyridae. It is classified into the order Grui based on anatomical characteristics, but its relationship to other families in the order Grui is unclear. It is distributed from southern Mexico to tropical South America, and mainly lives near water such as rivers and lakes in forests at altitudes of about 1000m or less. Total length is about 46cm. Its beak, neck, and legs are somewhat long, and at first glance it resembles a small heron. Its plumage is rich in brown overall, with fine horizontal stripes of light and dark brown, white, black, reddish brown, and yellowish brown on its back, tail, and wings.

ツル目ジャノメドリ科の鳥。この科はジャノメドリ1種よりなる。解剖学上の特徴からツル目に分類されているが，ツル目の他の科との類縁関係は明らかでない。メキシコ南部から熱帯南アメリカに分布し，標高約1000m以下の森林内の河川や湖沼などの水辺におもに生息している。全長約46cm。くちばし，くび，脚はやや長く，全体の感じは一見小型のサギ類に似る。羽色は全体に褐色に富み，濃淡褐色，白色，黒色，赤褐色，黄褐色などの細かい横斑が背，尾，翼上にある。
