Date Tanemune

Japanese:
Date Tanemune
Year of death: June 19, 1565 (July 16, 1565)
Year of birth: 1488
A military commander in the Sengoku period. Son of Naomune, his mother was the daughter of Uesugi Sadazane, the Shugo of Echigo. His first name was Shojiro, and he was given one character of the name Tanemune by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshitane. He was a Junior Fourth Rank, Lower. During the Eikyo era (1504-21), he engaged in conflict with the neighboring Mogami clan, and in 1522 he was appointed to the unprecedented post of Mutsu Shugoshoku and Sakyo no Daibu, and in 1532 he moved from Yanagawa Castle to Koori Nishiyama Castle. He also played a groundbreaking role in the establishment of the Date clan's power as a Sengoku daimyo, by creating and enacting the Muneyaku Nikki in 1543, the national law Chinkaishu in 1545, and the Danzencho in 1546. On the other hand, he caused resentment within the clan by strengthening the imposition of Muneyaku and Danzen, which became a factor in the Tenbun Rebellion (1558-1559). The direct cause of this rebellion was a conflict between Tanemune and Harumune, father and son, over the succession of Tanemune's third son, Sanemoto, to the Uesugi clan, the guardian of Echigo. Tanemune was defeated in this conflict and retired to Marumori Castle in Igu County. He had many children, who were successors and married into various families in Soma, Ashina, Osaki, Kasai, Nikaido, Tamura, and Kakeda, and he established a strong foothold in central and southern Oshu. He also enjoyed waka poetry (he was also called Juten). He was buried at Shoonji Temple in Marumori. His grave is at Yorinji Temple in Fukushima City.
