Toneri In 776 (Hōki 7), ten of the Toneri were selected to carry weapons and serve the Crown Prince (Prince Yamabe, later Emperor Kanmu) day and night, and were called sword-carrying Toneri. On May 27, 806 (Daido 1), the number of sword-carrying Toneri was increased to 20 (the Crown Prince was Prince Kaminobu, later Emperor Saga), and on May 8, 857 (Ten'an 1), the number was increased to 30 (the Crown Prince was Prince Korehito, later Emperor Seiwa). 〈たてはき〉〈たてわき〉の舎人ともいい,略して帯刀とも書く。古代,春宮(とうぐう)坊の舎人監(とねりのつかさ)に舎人人が置かれたが(〈東宮職員令〉),776年(宝亀7)舎人のうち10人を選び兵仗(武器)を帯して夙夜(しゆくや)(昼夜)皇太子(山部親王,のち桓武天皇)に侍して警備させ,これを帯刀舎人と呼んだ。806年(大同1)5月27日帯刀を20人に増員し(皇太子は賀美能親王,のち嵯峨天皇),さらに857年(天安1)5月8日には30人に増した(皇太子は惟仁親王,のち清和天皇)。
