A village in Minamitsuru County, southeastern Yamanashi Prefecture. Population 1,553 (1995). Located at the northern foot of Mt. Fuji. Lake Saiko is in the center, Lake Kawaguchiko in the east, the Misaka Mountains in the north, and Aokigahara in the south. Although there is little arable land, highland vegetables such as corn, radishes, and cabbage are cultivated, and dairy farming is also carried out. In 1966, both the villages of Nemba and Lake Saiko were devastated by a landslide caused by a typhoon, but in 1971 the residents moved to Aokigahara and other areas and restarted as a private lodging village. As it is relatively far from the Kawaguchiko Interchange on the Chuo Expressway, it is marketed as a quiet tourist destination. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
