French mathematician and astronomer. He started out as a soldier. He was an ardent supporter of Newton's theory. In 1736-1737, he went to Lapland as the leader of a surveying team to determine the correct shape of the Earth's ellipsoid, and proved that the Earth is flat from north to south. In 1744, he published his principle of least action in mechanics.
