Wallace
British naturalist. From 1854 he studied the distribution of organisms in the Malay Archipelago, proposing a biological boundary that he later named the Wallace Line. In 1858, while he was in the archipelago, he independently arrived at the theory of evolution based on the theory of natural selection. This paper was presented at the Linnean Society together with Darwin's paper, and became the basis for establishing the theory of evolution. His major works include The Malay Archipelago (1869) and Darwinism (1889), among others.
