A highway connecting Hiratsuka in the southeast of Isesaki City, Gunma Prefecture, and Ashio in the southwest of Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. Since the early modern period, it was used to transport copper from the Ashio Copper Mine. There were five post towns on the road: Sawan, Hanawa, Omama, Ohara, and Hiratsuka. Copper was sent by boat from Hiratsuka Riverbank down the Tone River, via Sekijuku and Edogawa River, to Edo. After the Meiji period, copper exports were shifted to Nikko, and the highway fell into decline. A copper storehouse from that time remains in Omama.
