…Some people consider the Precambrian period to be about 4 billion years before the birth of the Earth, but the Precambrian period is called the 3.4 billion years from 3.8 to 4 billion years ago, which is the age of the oldest rocks that can be studied on Earth, and the period before that is called the Pregeological Era. The Paleozoic and later geological periods are called the Phanerozoic eon because of the abundant fossil evidence, while the Precambrian period was called the Cryptozoic eon, but this term is rarely used today. In 1872, American JD Dana defined the geological system of gneiss and granite formed before the Cambrian period as the Archean Era. …
