Tachibana (Orange) - Tachibana
An evergreen tree of the Rutaceae family, this small citrus fruit is native to Japan. It is also known as the "Ukon no Tachibana" at the Shishinden in Kyoto. It grows to around 3m tall. The branches have thorns, the leaves are small, and the flowers are white. The fruit is small and oblate, 2-2.5cm in diameter, weighs around 10g, and ripens to a yellow color. The skin is easy to peel, but the flesh is very sour and cannot be eaten raw. It contains 4-6 seeds. The Tachibana crest, which features leaves and fruit, was the family crest of the Tachibana clan in ancient times, and of the samurai clans such as the Ii and Kuroda clans.

ミカン科の常緑小高木で日本原産の小柑橘(かんきつ)。京都紫宸殿の〈右近の橘〉としても知られる。樹高は3m内外。枝にはとげがあり,葉は小型で,花は白色。果実は小さな扁球形で径2〜2.5cm,10g内外,黄色に熟す。皮はむきやすいが果肉は酸味が強く,生食できない。種子4〜6個を有する。葉と果実を配した橘紋は,古くは橘氏の,武家では井伊,黒田氏等の家紋であった。
