An instrument used in Indonesian gamelan ensemble music. A melodic percussion instrument consisting of a dozen or so bronze kettle-shaped gongs arranged in one or two rows. They are struck by hitting the protrusions with a stick held in each hand. In the ensemble, they share the main melody or melodic embellishments, and in the case of embellishments, they help to provide rhythmic variation. They are also often used as solos to introduce the entire ensemble. In large ensembles, large and small gongs are used simultaneously, complementing each other to embellish the melody.
