A samurai family in the medieval Higo region. A powerful branch family of the Otomo clan, on a par with the Shiga and Tahara clans, they were successively called Takuma betto, beginning with Yoshihide, the second son of the first Otomo clan leader Yoshinao. Yoshihide based himself in Kankura Manor in Takuma County, which Yoshinao had given him, and held the position of land steward and subordinate officer in that manor and in Kanoki Higashi Manor in the neighboring Akita County, controlling the headman class in the area. His son Tokihide participated in the Mongol Wars with his brother Akihide, and as a result of his achievements he was given the position of land steward in part of Kanzaki Manor in Hizen Province, as well as land steward in Shitoya in Chikuzen Province and Murayoshi in Koshi County in Higo Province. The next son, Yorihide, also held the position of Shirakawa Tsumotoshiki, becoming an increasingly powerful force in central Higo. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
