…The starting point of modern Polish picture books is said to be The Locomotive (1938) by Jan Levit and George Hym, but the two left for England the following year in 1939 and have been active there ever since. Other authors include Marcin Szanzer, who wrote the musical picture book Do-Re-Mi (1955), Olga Siemaszko, who typifies the tastes of Polish parents and children, Adam Kilian, who has a background in graphic design, and Stromio, whose elegant, philosophical style of painting is well known. In Northern Europe, the Swedes Carl Larsson and Elsa Beskow are already considered classics. …
