A marine fish of the Basking shark family in the Lamniformes order (illustration). Its teeth are so small that at first glance it appears toothless, and its long gill slits look like wrinkles, hence the name derives from the word uba, which means grandmother. It is also called baka-zame (baka shark) because it looks stupid, and tengu-zame (long-nosed shark) because its nose is sharp when young. Its English name is basking shark (meaning a shark basking in the sun). There is only one species in one family, one genus, and it is found in cold waters around the world, but in the waters around Japan it appears in coastal areas in early spring. It is characterized by its large body and gill slits that extend from the throat to the back. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
英名はbasking shark(ひなたぼっこをするサメの意)。
