A city in the northern part of Andhra Pradesh, southeastern India. It is the administrative capital of Warangal district. It is located about 140 km northeast of Hyderabad, and tributaries of the Krishna and Godavari rivers flow through the area. It was the capital of the Kakatiya Kingdom (c. 1000-1326), and is home to a Hindu temple (12th century) known for its 1000 pillars and stone statues, and the fort of King Ganapati Deva, one of the most important historical buildings in the Deccan. Industry is thriving, producing cotton cloth, carpets, blankets, and silk products. There are universities of engineering, pharmacy, and science. Population: 446,760 (1991).
