Synovial fluid

Japanese: 関節液 - かんせつえき（英語表記）synovial fluid

It is a type of tissue fluid present in the joint cavity, and its main functions are lubrication, i.e., acting as a lubricant to allow joint movement with low friction, and maintaining the nutrition of the articular cartilage. Since articular cartilage does not have blood vessels and cannot receive a blood supply, synovial fluid supplies it with nutrients instead. In normal joints, the amount of synovial fluid is extremely small, only a few ccs even in large joints such as the knee, and it is difficult to collect it. Normal synovial fluid is clear, pale yellow, and extremely viscous.

関節腔に存在する組織液の一種であるが，そのおもな役目は，潤滑，すなわち関節の運動が低摩擦で行われるための潤滑剤としての役目と，関節軟骨の栄養の維持の二つである。関節軟骨には血管がなく血液の供給が得られないので，関節液が代りに栄養を供給している。正常関節では関節液の量はきわめて少なく，ひざのような大きな関節でも数cc以下にすぎず，その採取は困難である。正常関節液は，透明で淡黄色を呈し，きわめて粘稠（ねんちゆう）性に富んでいる。
