…本来は身体に関する(somato‐)学問(‐logy)のことで，解剖学･生理学を含む身体全般を取り扱う科学のことであるが，今日ではやや狭く，生きている人体を解剖することなく体表面から視察･触察して，生体の体表や内部の形と構造，および器官の機能を理解しようとする学問のことをいうことが多い。体表解剖学surface anatomyあるいは生体観察somatoscopyの同義語として用いられることもあるが，広義には生体の体表の形や大きさを数量的に示す生体計測somatometryを含んでいる。　生体を対象とする調査の利点は，身体を傷つけることのない点がまずあげられるが，皮膚や虹彩の色の変化や，筋肉および各器官の硬直化などの死後変化のない自然の状態が観察できることにある。…
