An application software execution environment currently being developed by Adobe Systems. Adobe Integrated Runtime is an abbreviation for Adobe. By installing software called the "runtime" in advance, it is possible to run application software developed using standard web technologies such as Flash and Flex developed by Adobe, as well as HTML, JavaScript, and AJAX. Its distinctive feature is that it makes use of web development technologies to develop application software that runs independently without a web browser. As of December 2007, beta versions of the AIR runtime are available for Windows and Mac OS, allowing common programs to run regardless of the OS (basic software). The ability to run common programs regardless of the OS is similar to the computer language Java, but with AIR there is no need to learn a unique computer language.

アドビシステムズ社が開発中の、アプリケーションソフトの実行環境。Adobe Integrated Runtimeの略。事前に「ランタイム」と呼ばれるソフトをインストールしておくことで、同社が開発したFlashやFlexをはじめ、HTML、JavaScript、AJAXといったウェブで標準的な技術を利用して開発したアプリケーションソフトを実行することができる。ウェブ開発の技術を生かして、ウェブブラウザを使用せずに単独で動作するアプリケーションソフトが開発できるのが特徴である。AIRランタイムは、2007年12月現在、Windows版とMac OS版のベータ版が提供されており、OS(基本ソフト)を問わず共通のプログラムを動作させられる。OSを問わずに共通のプログラムが動作する点はコンピューター言語Javaと同様だが、AIRでは独自のコンピューター言語を学ぶ必要がない。
