Based on his vivid experiences, he published Tent-life in Siberia (1870), a detailed depiction of the life and customs of the indigenous people of the Far East. In 1885-86, he visited Russia again at the request of Century magazine in New York, and published Siberia and the Exile System (2 volumes) in 1891.
