Takashima [town] - Takashima

Japanese: 高島[町] - たかしま
Takashima [town] - Takashima
A former town in Nishisonogi County in the southern part of Nagasaki Prefecture. It consists of Takashima and Hashima islands to the west of the Nagasaki Peninsula, and is connected to Nagasaki City by regular ferries. Takashima was the first place in Japan to carry out modern coal mining in 1868, producing high-quality coal, but the mine closed in 1986. Hashima Island was also called Gunkanjima (Battleship Island) because of the many high-rise apartment buildings, but the mine closed in 1974. Drinking water is transported via an undersea waterway from Miwa Town (now part of Nagasaki City) on the opposite shore. In January 2005, Nishisonogi County's Kayagi Town, Iojima Town, Nomozaki Town, Miwa Town, and Sotome Town were incorporated into Nagasaki City. Area: 1.27 km2 . Population: 904 (2003).
