Shigarami Zoushi - Shigarami Zoushi

Japanese: しからみ草紙 - しがらみぞうし
Shigarami Zoushi - Shigarami Zoushi
A literary magazine from the Meiji period. It was founded in October 1889 by Mori Ogai together with his brother Miki Takeji, sister Koganei Kimiko, Ochiai Naofumi and other Shinsei-sha members. Its aim was to set a fence around the literary world and guide it in the right direction. It mainly featured Ogai's critiques based on German aesthetics, as well as his critiques, historical biographies, translations, poems and novels, and also featured contributions from Koda Rohan, Ozaki Koyo, Uchida Roan and Yosano Tekkan. It attracted attention for Ogai's "Utakata no Ki" (Record of the Ephemeral), his translation of "Improvised Poet," and his "Debate on Unidealized Poets" with Tsubouchi Shoyo, and contributed to the establishment of literary criticism. It ceased publication with the 59th issue in August 1894, and was succeeded by "Mesamashi-gusa."
