Born January 26, 1891 in Spokane, Washington, USA. [Died] April 5, 1976. Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Canadian neurosurgeon and neurophysiologist. By applying electrical stimulation to the brain exposed during surgery, he created detailed maps of the language and memory areas of the human cerebral cortex. He studied at Princeton University and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and founded the Montreal Neurological Institute, later becoming its director. In 1943 he was made a Fellow of the Royal Society of the United Kingdom, and received the Order of Merit for the 50th year. His books include "The cerebral cortex of Man" (1950) and "Speech and Brain-Mechanisms" (59).
