Shimoda [city] - Shimoda
Shimoda is located in the southeast of Shizuoka Prefecture, at the southern tip of the Izu Peninsula. It was incorporated as a city in 1971. It developed around Shimoda Port, and is the terminus of the Izu Kyuko Line. The port was an important maritime port for East-West traffic, and during the Edo period, Shimoda Magistrate was stationed there. After the port opened in 1854, US Consul General Harris stayed at Gyokusen-ji Temple in the city with Heusken, and it became a stage for Japan-US diplomacy. As a base for deep-sea fishing and with little flat land, the main agricultural products are citrus fruits and flowers, and in recent years it has developed as a tourist city. There are many historical sites and famous places, such as Rendai-ji Temple, Shimoda hot springs, Ryosen-ji Temple (historic site), Gyokusen-ji Temple (historic site), the tomb of the Chinese woman O-Kichi, Shirahama Beach, and Tsumekizaki, where there is a daffodil colony. Area: 104.38 km2 . Population: 25,013 (2010).
