Kataoka Bay

...In the center is the shield volcano Mount Hachibuse (155m), in the southwest is Mount Mitsuzuka (190m), and on the northeast coast is a low marshland including Bettsupi Marsh. Facing the Paramushir Strait is Boykovo Bay (Kataoka Bay, named after the chamberlain Kataoka, who inspected the area in 1892). In 1893, Gunji Shigetada organized the Hokogikai (Hokogi Association) to investigate Shumushu Island, and is known for relocating to the area in 1896.
