A volcanic island in the South Atlantic, a British territory. It is also called Gough's Island or Diego Alvarez Island. It is an uninhabited island with an area of about 80 km2, but meteorological observations and academic research are conducted there. It is located halfway between South America and Africa, at the intersection of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and the Walvis Ridge that stretches from Southwest Africa. It has a marine climate with an annual rainfall of 3,400 mm, and seals and seabirds breed here. It was discovered by the Portuguese in the early 16th century, and became a British territory in 1816. In 1938, it was incorporated into the colony of Saint Helena along with Tristan da Cunha Island. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
