Double cropping - Nikisaku

Cultivating the same crop twice a year in the same field or rice paddy. Potatoes are grown twice a year, in spring and autumn in warm areas such as Kyushu, and some vegetables are grown three times a year. Rice was also once grown twice a year in the Kacho Plain of Kochi Prefecture and Oshima County in Kagoshima Prefecture. Double cropping is common in Taiwan, southern China, and Southeast Asia. Because the environmental conditions are different for first and second crops, the varieties planted are often different, and the cultivation management methods are also different for each.

同じ畑や田に1年に2回同じ作物を栽培すること。ジャガイモは九州など暖地で春作と秋作と二期作され、野菜類では三期作されるものもある。イネもかつては、高知県香長(かちょう)平野や鹿児島県大島郡などで二期作が行われた。台湾や中国南部、東南アジアでは二期作が普通である。一期作と二期作とでは環境条件が異なるので、作付けする品種も違うことが多く、栽培管理の方法もそれぞれ異なっている。
