Devadatta - Daiba

Japanese:
Devadatta - Daiba

A Buddhist philosopher from India in the 2nd or 3rd century. His original name was Āryadeva, and he was also known as Seōdeva. He was born the son of a king on the island of Ceylon, but is said to have abandoned the throne, become a monk, and become a disciple of Nagarjuna in South India. He studied Mahayana Buddhism, especially the idea of emptiness as taught by his teacher, and established the foundations of the Madhyamaka theory that was formed in the 4th or 5th century. In his main work, The Four Hundred Treatises, he develops the philosophy of emptiness and criticizes various ideas both inside and outside Buddhism at the time. He also wrote The Hundred Treatises and The Hundred Characters Treatise, but it is said that he was assassinated out of hatred for his sharp refutation of other theories.
